First things first – the licks!

lickslickslicks

and the vid (which is a bit old and rubbish and will be updated – im going to move everything to vimeo)

Two nifty little licks from kurt here, both use triads to imply a sound and give the line structure. In the first line kurt uses the Ab and Bb triads over Eflat major and Db and Eb over G7 to give an altered sound. In the second lick he usesAb and Bb triads over D7 again to give an altered sound.

huh?

Actually its all quite easy, you play triads 4 and 5 of the home key of the mode you want to imply

huh?

so for an Eflat major sound we play chords 4 and 5 of Eflat major (Ab and Bb) for  a G altered sound we play chords 4 and 5 of Ab melodic minor ( the altered scale is the 7th mode of melodic minor) which are Db and Eb.

It sound hip and ultra modern and is easy-ish once you get the hang of it. If you are still confused or want a good laugh (or both) check out frank gambales 80′s masterpeice modes no more mystery here

Good luck!
